Clarence House

Overlooking English Harbour, this beautiful example of a British Caribbean vernacular residence has been immaculately restored and is now a museum and garden. Originally built for the Naval Commissioner in charge of the Dockyard in 1804, the house served as the nerve centre for naval operations in the early nineteenth century. From the 1850s onwards, the house had its second life as the official country residence for the governors of Antigua. In this role, the house hosted luncheons and dinners for visiting dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, and Princess Margaret. Today, the house museum displays a history of Caribbean vernacular furniture, exhibiting the high craftsmanship of Antiguan artisans.
