The 1984 National Parks Act established the National Parks Authority (NPA) and the boundaries of Nelson’s Dockyard National Park (NDNP).
The National Parks Authority is a unique heritage and environmental protection management organization that is established as a Statutory Corporation. The NPA is a self-sustaining, not-for-profit organization with duties to protect the history, culture, and environment of the areas under its jurisdiction. To support this mission, the National Parks Authority was given regulatory powers governing the construction and development of Crown and private property within the National Parks.
