Climate change is more than an environmental issue. For heritage sites like Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, it is also a cultural challenge.
In 2025, the National Parks Authority (NPA) partnered with Preserving Legacies to host Climate Change in a Continuous Cultural Landscape, a workshop focused on understanding the climate risks facing Antigua and Barbuda, with particular attention to the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park.
The workshop brought together stakeholders to identify the key climate-related risks affecting the Park, as well as the factors that may increase or reduce its vulnerability. These discussions form an important foundation for developing a climate risk assessment and adaptation plan for the National Park.
As Antigua and Barbuda moves through another hurricane season, the need to understand these vulnerabilities and strengthen the resilience of our natural and cultural heritage remains increasingly important.
For the National Parks Authority, climate resilience is an essential part of heritage conservation. By planning today, we can help ensure that the landscapes, structures, ecosystems, and stories that define our heritage continue to be protected for generations to come.
