Racing in Paradise: Superyacht Challenge Antigua Returns
March 5, 2026Nestled within the heart of Nelson’s Dockyard National Park in English Harbour, the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel offers guests a rare opportunity to stay inside a living piece of Caribbean and maritime history. Located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hotel seamlessly blends 18th-century character with modern comfort, creating a warm and distinctive experience for visitors from around the world.
Following recent upgrades to all guest rooms, including refreshed interiors and new furnishings, the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel is proud to welcome visitors to a space that feels both renewed and timeless — where history is preserved, comfort is elevated, and hospitality remains at the forefront.
A Building with a Story
Housed in a beautifully restored Georgian yellow-brick warehouse built in 1789, the Copper & Lumber Store once played a vital role in the operations of the British Royal Navy. The building was originally used to store lumber and copper sheeting for repairing warships stationed at English Harbour — then considered one of the most strategically important naval bases in the Caribbean.
Copper sheathing protected ships’ hulls and increased speed, while the upper floors and attic housed sailors resting in hammocks as their vessels underwent repairs. These very galleries now form the foundation of the hotel’s unique layout, allowing guests to experience history not as observers, but as participants.
After the Royal Navy abandoned English Harbour in the late 19th century, the building fell into disrepair until extensive restoration efforts in the 1960s transformed it into a boutique historic inn. Care was taken to preserve original post-and-beam construction techniques, exposed timbers, and brick arches, while opening the centre of the building to create the hotel’s iconic courtyard.
Historic Character, Modern Comfort
Today, each suite at the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel reflects the romance and character of Nelson’s Dockyard. Recent room upgrades and new furniture additions enhance the guest experience while remaining true to the building’s Georgian heritage. Exposed beams, weathered brickwork, and antique-inspired furnishings are paired with modern amenities to ensure comfort, space, and relaxation.
Guests consistently praise the hotel’s warmth, atmosphere, and attentive service, with one recent five-star review describing it as:
“A beautifully renovated historic building with spacious rooms, warm and accommodating staff, and a perfect base in English Harbour. We enjoyed it so much, we returned for a second night.”
With cafés, bakeries, shops, museums, and waterfront views just steps away, the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel offers both convenience and immersion in one of Antigua’s most vibrant historic districts.
Dining at the Heart of the Dockyard
The Mainbrace Restaurant & Pub is an integral part of the Copper & Lumber experience. Overlooking English Harbour, Fort Berkeley, and the Georgian Dockyard Marina, the restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a setting that captures the elegance and atmosphere of historic Caribbean seafaring life.
The menu blends Caribbean and international flavours, with the courtyard providing a romantic, European-inspired setting framed by stone architecture and massive wooden beams. The restaurant is especially well known for its lobster lunches, drawing both guests and locals throughout the year.
On Friday nights, the hotel hosts Seafood Friday, famously named by USA Today as one of the top five fish fries in the Caribbean — a must-experience event for anyone visiting Antigua.
For lighter fare, the Mainbrace Pub offers a relaxed stop for visitors exploring the National Park or returning from nearby hikes, serving cold beers, rum punches, and quick bites within the historic Georgian pub setting.
A Destination for More Than Just Stays
Beyond accommodation, the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel also serves as a distinctive venue for weddings, corporate meetings, and special events, offering an unmatched backdrop of history, harbour views, and heritage architecture within Nelson’s Dockyard.
